e-Portfolios and the future

My plan is to begin the process of changing the way Professional Learning is taught at Buna High School in August 2017. This training will extend through May 2017. Each teacher will create an e-Portfolio that they will use in their class to help their students, parents, and administrators collaboratively engage in the students learning. education-1580143_960_720I chose this time frame to give teacher ample training so they can pass along their knowledge about e-ports to their students so they can be used effectively and efficiently. Through this ten month PL training the administrators will have time to make the necessary adjustments for the 2018-2019 school year when student e-portfolios are fully implemented.

My outline for the implementation of e-portfolios keeps the 5 Key Principles of Effective PD identified by Allison Gulamhussein (2013) in mind as I implement e-Portfolios across the high school campus. Some of the resources to help implement this change will be videos and other online resources on different types of e-Portfolios, other teachers who grasp the e-Ports and become assistants, examples of e-Portfolios and how they are created, articles that explain the benefits of having and using one, and search other teachers wordpress sites since that is what they will use to make theirs.

We, as teachers, must realize that we are helping our students enhance their learning experiences, improve their learning environments, and take control over their own education. When it is all said and done, employers who are looking to hire students straight out of school, do not want to know what classes our students have completed, but what information and skills they have learned instead! What better way can we help our students showcase their acquired knowledge, other than compiling everything in one area as they progress through their educational program on some form of e-Portfolio platform?

woman-1446557_960_720          My ultimate goal is to have every teacher at Buna ISD using an e-Portfolio, not only for their benefit, but to benefit their students. The e-Portfolio will allow the teachers, students, parents, and administration to connect easily. The students work can be shared, graded, and reviewed at any point on or before a due date. The teacher can easily and quickly view the students work any where they have internet access and share thoughts with the student. The grading process will be much easier because everything will be digital. We are living in a digital age, we must accept it and learn how to use it as a group to benefit everyone.

BHAG: Upon completion of this Professional Learning course teachers will be efficient bloggers capable of and comfortable with implementing effective e-Portfolio techniques in their classrooms, gained through ongoing practice, activities, and collaboration with other learners.
